Our Community, Amazing Tutors, Canex Building Supplies Ltd. and Surrey Urban Mission Society work to accelerate urgently needed progress for our Surrey North Community

SUMS Home Harvest Fall Fundraiser a Resounding Success:  Corporate Sponsors lend a hand to SUMS

Every week a dedicated team of volunteers at the Surrey Urban Mission Society serves approximately six hundred meals to people in need. The Mission recognizes that people do not just need food--they also need to know that they have a place of refuge where they can make friendships, and feel less isolated.

The Surrey Urban Mission Society launched its Inaugural Home Harvest Fall Fundraiser on September 18, 2015 at the Surrey City Hall Civic Plaza.  The event raised funds to provide food security, and resources to connect people to housing and health services to help the hundreds of men, women, children, and families they work with every day. Surrey604 and Jelly Marketing promoted it.

John Wolff, SUMS chairman, kicked off the event by capitalizing on a strong "welcome" start. Vaughn Swenson captivated our interest with his songs.  Scott Brown, President of Fifth Avenue Marketing, then surged ahead with his emcee skills.

Alan Davis, President of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Steve Dooley, Executive Director of SFU, Councillor Bruce Hayne, Peter Fodos, Options, and John Wolff exemplified excellent sportsmanship. Cuisine and Company provided all of the crowd-pleasing sumptuous appetizers. Rich Smallwood of All City Auctioneers and Eric Hole ignited the crowd.

The Mystery Home Chef was non other than the Mayor's husband who had to cleverly compete against celebrity chef Ken Gregory, Northview Golf and Country Club, The Sylvia Hotel's Chef Rodrigo Fereira and Michael Maciborski, in Ron Newell and Sysco's Celebrity Chef Cook Off Competition.  Linda Hepner, our mayor, was rather shocked by exclaiming that "[her husband] just doesn't cook at home!" They all had to fire up the stove to satisfy three celebrity judges:  Sean Hodgins of Century Group, Marilyn Pearson of Cuisine and Company, and Chef David Jorge--the Winner of Canada's Top Chef 2015.

Our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation was an active participant and we forged ahead by lending our support to the Surrey Urban Mission Society and to Bruce Kehler, CEO of Canex Building Supplies.  He sponsored the event, and presented a brand new 2016 Ford Transit vehicle, equipped with a wheelchair lift, to the Surrey Urban Mission Society.  Bruce blazed ahead and offered up the most worthy challenge ever.  For every dollar raised over the next two weeks, the Kehler Family Trust will match dollar for dollar up to an astounding $50 000.

A Kind Word from the Surrey Urban Mission Society

To Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation

"Sikandar, Suzanne and family. Thanks so much for your kindness and consideration of our children at Summer Day Camp. Due to your introduction of people and financial resources to the mission this past few months, the children had a great summer and we were able to support a number of young camp leaders needing to earn money to enable them to pay for school this year."

-Blessings, Jonquil Hallgate, Surrey Urban Mission Society

Surrey Urban Mission Builds Us Up

The Surrey Urban Mission Society has been part of the North Surrey Community for over 16 years serving people in our community who live in poverty and those who are homeless and or vulnerably housed. It is home to the largest number of single-parent families...numbering over 6200 families. SUMS offers a variety of programs and connect people to resources and services offered by other service organizations in our city. For the past ten years, SUMS has offered an eight week Summer Day Camp for a hundred children who might not have the opportunity to participate in educational and exciting fun-filled summer activities. Last year the Mission served over 120,000 meals to people who otherwise would have gone without one. Each winter the Mission is an Extreme Weather site providing shelter during the inclement weather for up to 60 people on the nights they are open.

Due to the involvement of hundreds of volunteers and an incredible collaboration of individuals, members of faith communities, schools, colleges and universities, business and community organizations who donate food and needed items, they are able to help neighbors who struggle to meet basic needs each day. The Surrey Urban Mission Society gives thanks to their neighbors and guests in the Mission community who struggle with great challenges and adversity each day and yet share grace and friendship with them and teach all of us the true meaning of community.

The Amazing Tutor’s Children’s Foundation greatly appreciates John Wolff and Jonquil Hallgate's generous contributions to help our Surrey North community advance and progress. Together we can all help families meet the challenges that lie ahead.

  We welcome your inquiries.

While the paths are many, the way of truth is single. Whatever mercy our creator opens for mankind, none can withhold it. There is no greater prize other than to bring peace, evolution and fruitfulness to our community. This is the Royal path, the Divine Path, which the founders of all religions, and truthful people, have walked on, whatever the age or ethnicity they belong to. This spiritual path reflects the beauty, grace, inclusiveness, mercy and pristine unity of mankind. We can spiritually hope for a better tomorrow and we can collectively do better by taking care of our community.
