Science Fiction and Fantasy bring the most extraordinary science, space, and emerging tech stories to your door!

Creative and insightful fiction is invaluable in developing a young reader’s literacy and imagination alike.  The stories most likely to captivate young readers are more wonderous and fanciful than dry and mundane.  As science fiction and fantasy tend to be the most fantastical genres, they are arguably the best suited to engrain young readers with a love of reading fiction as leisure.  Indeed, science fiction and fantasy are two of the most widely read and deeply fascinating genres in modern literature.  Fantasy is one of the oldest literary genres, as a tradition that dates back to ancient mythology, with tales of legendary heroes traveling through wonderous lands and encountering powerful deities, horrifying monsters, and magical wonders.  Science fiction and fantasy are escapist fiction.  Fantasy takes readers on adventures to fantastical wholly fictional realms or even our own world, encountering the sort of wonders seen in the mythological traditions that inspired the genre.  Science fiction similarly takes readers on adventures to far away galaxies, parallel universes similar yet different to our own, across time and space in fantastical time machines and starships, to the lost underwater civilization of Atlantis, and anywhere else that could reasonably be imagined.  Inquisitive readers are introduced to otherworldly characters and out-of-this-world technologies that have not yet been developed, all of which can capture the imagination of readers as readily as the wizards and dragons of fantasy.

The worlds of science fiction and fantasy strike a deep connection with its fans. Spatial or temporal settings in the future, scenes in outer space, on other worlds, in subterranean Earth, and even parallel universes, challenge us to think beyond the ordinary and into the darker regions of other realities.  Science fiction is and has been written by diverse authors from around the world. As the scientific and science fiction community continues to create mind blowing serious science fiction—this is as good as it gets—fans and critics are holding their breath and eagerly waiting for the next thrilling upcoming novel, movie, or TV series.  Science fiction and fantasy constitute massive, eclectic, and constantly growing bodies of stories to explore, which can be divided into numerous subgenres with their own distinctive characteristic tropes.  These stories moreover span a wide range of target audiences, from young children first beginning to read through to mature adults with sophisticated intellects.

For all of their aforementioned similarities, science fiction and fantasy also differ in several critical ways.  Fantasy is often set in fictional worlds populated by fantastical beings not beholden to the natural laws of reality.  This popular subgenre of fantasy is known as high fantasy.  Although wholly fictional, these high fantasy settings are typically largely inspired by real world history and mythology.  For example, J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire, and Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher are all set in fictional high fantasy worlds strongly inspired by the actual history and mythology of Medieval Europe.  However, not all fantasy is high fantasy.  Urban fantasy is set in the present-day real world, differing from reality only in that it includes one or more fantastical elements.  Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, for example, is an urban fantasy in which its protagonist encounters various incarnations of mythological deities as he journeys across the continental USA.  Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles is similarly urban fantasy as it is set in what is ostensibly the real world, differing from actual reality only by its incorporation of various vampire characters.  Regardless of setting, fantasy is characterized by utterly fantastical elements defying the natural laws of the real world and would thus be deemed too unrealistic and even outright impossible in nearly any other genre.  However, in fantasy, magic can vaguely explain away any otherwise unrealistic elements.  Conversely, science fiction typically does not use magic to similarly avoid straining the reader’s incredulity.  Instead, science fiction strives to explore the potential and limitations of science and technology, extrapolating from the present to imagine a possible version of our real world at some future date.  As the acclaimed and highly influential science fiction author Ray Bradbury once quipped: “I define science fiction as the art of the possible.  Fantasy is the art of the impossible.”

The extent to which science fiction is realistically grounded in actual science varies widely, dividing it into a broad spectrum with sci-fi fantasy and hard science fiction as opposing extremes.  (However, most science fiction, such as the Star Trek franchise, lies somewhere between the extremes of sci-fi fantasy and hard science fiction.)  Sci-fi fantasy, such as Frank Herbert’s Dune and the Star Wars franchise, freely utilizes numerous elements characteristic of science fiction, such as robots with artificial intelligence, faster-than-light interstellar travel, extraterrestrials, etc.  However, sci-fi fantasy is regardless still fantasy at heart—often with as little basis in the real physical world.  Indeed, Dune and Star Wars merely replace “magic” with “The Spice” and “The Force,” respectively, allowing its mystical characters to defy the natural laws of the physical world as readily as any high fantasy wizard.  Hard science fiction, conversely, strives to be as grounded and realistic as possible; entirely beholden to what our current knowledge suggests may one day be possible.  Andy Weir’s The Martian is an excellent example of hard science fiction, exploring how an astronaut stranded on an entirely possible near future Martian colony could conceivably survive long enough to be rescued.  Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon (adapted into the film ChaRly) is also an excellent example of hard science fiction.  Set in the then present, the only fantastical element in Flowers for Algernon is a revolutionary medical operation capable of dramatically increasing intelligence.  The first-person perspective of Flowers for Algernon asks the reader to imagine what it would be like to be an individual with an intelligence well below average, which dramatically soars to an ingenious peak, only to drop back to the original low level.  In the process, the reader develops great empathy for people with intelligences at the rare extreme ends of the IQ bell curve.

Much of science fiction explores the potential impact of increasingly advanced science and technology at some future date.  This includes as yet undiscovered scientific possibilities such as teleportation, time travel, and faster-than-light travel.  This also includes predictions and speculations concerning such potential technology as brain-computer interfacing, biomedical and genetic engineering, advanced artificial intelligence, and world destroying weaponry.  For example, one of the earliest and most influential science fiction authors, H. G. Wells, predicted the atomic bomb in 1914’s A World Set Free, decades before the first atomic bomb was detonated by the Manhattan Project in 1945.  The devastation of future warfare is a major theme in Wells’s writing, which also created the highly popular alien invasion subgenre with 1898’s The War of the Worlds.  In such stories, mankind is in the greatest danger in all its history when they encounter hostile extraterrestrial lifeforms with massive, destructive, unstoppable weapons and interstellar spaceships unlike anything ever seen here on Earth. These invaders devour everything in its path, people and buildings alike.  As cities are being destroyed by intensive laser beams, people fleeing in panic, the countryside bursting in flames, wonderous minds are triggered to ask themselves if anyone—or anything—has the power to save our precious world?  Other examples of the alien invasion subgenre include Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Mars Attacks!, Signs, The Thing, Predator, and Independence Day.  The Day the Earth Stood Still is an interesting subversion of the subgenre, with a peaceful alien visitor attempting to warn Earth of the destructive potential of its increasingly technologically advanced warfare, only to be mistaken for a hostile invader.  The Day the Earth Stood Still is but one example of science fiction in which the alien visitor isn’t a hostile threat.  Other example of science fiction depicting peaceful alien visitors include E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  Of course, it is not always the extraterritorial who is the invader from another world.  Numerous other science fiction stories, such as the Alien and Star Trek franchises, invert the genre by having humans encounter extraterrestrials far from our home world of Earth at some future date in which we have begun to explore our galaxy ourselves in our own interstellar spacecraft.  The film Avatar both inverts and subverts the genre, by having a greedy human corporation invade a resource rich extraterrestrial planet using a military force with an overwhelming technological advantage.

Good science fiction does more than merely prophesize the potential advanced science and technology of the future, as impressive as that already is.  Good science fiction investigates the impact of this advanced science and technology upon society.  As the influential science fiction author Frederik Pohl once quipped: “A good science fiction story should be able to predict not the automobile but the traffic jam.”  The even more influential and acclaimed science fiction author Isaac Asimov went so far as to define modern science fiction as: “The only form of literature that consistently considers the nature of the changes that face us, the possible consequences, and the possible solutions.  That branch of literature which is concerned with the impact of scientific advance upon human beings.”  (Granted, Asimov’s definition is an excellent one when considering hard science fiction—but is unfortunate in its gate-keeping exclusion of sci-fi fantasy like Star Wars and Dune.)  The potential future imagined by science fiction varies wildly, once again generating a broad spectrum of subgenres with dystopian and utopian science fiction at opposing extremes.

Dystopian science fiction imagines bleak and horrifying possible futures as cautionary tales not to be emulated.  Dystopian stories are meant to be self-preventing prophecies, presenting a horrifying potential future in the hopes that society will avoid making it an eventual reality. For example, the 1997 film Gattaca is dystopian hard science fiction that considers how genetically engineering humans could led to an unjust caste system of privileged designer human elites and a disadvantaged underclass born of natural childbirth untampered by genetic engineering.  The warnings of dystopian science fiction are not limited to the potential consequences of advanced science and technology run amok.  George Orwell’s 1984, Margret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and the Mad Max films are all examples of dystopian fiction which extrapolates trends that are more sociopolitical and/or socioeconomical than scientific and technological, again taken to a horrifying extreme as a cautionary tale.  Lois Lowry’s The Giver is notable as an acclaimed dystopian novel suitable for younger readers.  This classic novel imagines a futuristic society that seems utopian at first glance given its tranquility, but the reader gradually learns that this peaceful status quo comes at the high cost of radically suppressing the individuality and emotions of its citizens.

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of dystopian fiction that is arguably especially relevant today.  Cyberpunk novels such as Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (adapted into the film Blade Runner), William Gibson’s Neuromancer, and Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash were written in the late 20th Century and sought to imagine a 21st Century in which corporations grow so massive and powerful they not only dominate the global economy but even supplant actual governments and thoroughly invade every aspect of everyday life.  Worse yet, the pollution and waste generated by the shallow and wanton greed of such extreme late-stage corporatism has essentially reduced Earth into a massive toxic landfill.  To escape this bleak reality, the characters of cyberpunk stories typically spend much of their lives within expansive, interactive, and fantastical virtual reality cyberworlds.  Later cyberpunk stories like The Matrix, Ready Player One, and Blade Runner 2049 keep this subgenre alive, even though the actual 21st Century has already arrived.  Cynics may suggest that the real world is becoming increasingly more like 21st Century predicted by Dick, Gibson, and Stephenson.  However, in truth, reality is still far from as extreme as depicted in such dystopian science fiction.  It is not too late for mankind to correct its ways and ensure that society itself develops in a more positive fashion alongside its technology.

Warnings of science run amok are common in science fiction, even outside of the dystopian subgenre.  Stories of mankind’s own creations turning against their creators, often to punish their reckless hubris, are quite common.  Indeed, one of the first science fiction stories is the most famous such example: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.  The reckless “mad” science need not be reanimation as in Frankenstein.  Genetic engineering is yet another potential mad science for such stories, as seen in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Gattaca, and Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park.  Artificial intelligence is perhaps the most ubiquitous variation of this common theme, as seen in such well-known examples as Blade Runner, The Terminator, The Matrix, and Westworld.  Such science fiction warns mankind to ensure that its science and technology does not eclipse its humanity or its common sense.

However, science fiction is hardly limited to negative cautionary tales to be avoided.  Indeed, science fiction also offers numerous more positive and even utopian examples to be emulated.  The most famous such example is Star Trek.  This revolutionary TV series depicts a 23rd Century where humanity overcame its prejudices and no longer discriminates on the basis of ancestry, nationality, poverty, religion, etc.  Individuals are instead distinguished by their earned rank, expertise, skills, talents, and personality.  Star Trek presents an optimistic best-possible future where humanity peacefully explores the galaxy together.  This space travel and exploration leads readers into uncharted territories and interplanetary warfare on distant planets—millions of light years away.  Interplanetary disputes and warfare are a major theme in Star Trek, with the crew of the USS Enterprise embracing the arc of eco-justice and healing for all beings.  From life and death encounters with hostile aliens like Klingons and the Borg, to befriending friendlier aliens like the Vulcans and the Kelpiens, science fiction aficionados are privileged to visit planets where no one has ever gone before.  This is in sharp contrast to Mad Max, which presents a pessimistic worst-possible future where we continue to fight among ourselves in a depleted post-apocalyptic wasteland.  Star Trek’s vision extends to its progressively diverse cast, bold at a time when US TV series included few minorities, especially in major roles.  Star Trek presented various ethnic and national minorities in significant roles when such groups were still disenfranchised and discriminated against in the real-world.  Media featuring a diverse range of positive role models from various under-represented and disenfranchised minority groups can be significantly uplifting for consumers of that media from the same demographics.

Star Trek is of course not perfectly utopian, as the USS Enterprise often encounters hostile extraterrestrials during its otherwise peaceful exploration of our galaxy.  However, even these extraterrestrial threats allow Star Trek to demonstrate its theme of peaceful co-existence and co-operation.  For example, the most significant recurring villains in the original 1960s Star Trek TV series were the aggressive warmongering Klingons.  By the time of the spin-on series Star Trek: The Next Generation, set a full century later, coexistence with the Klingons has been achieved.  In fact, a Klingon even serves as the chief security officer of that series’ USS Enterprise.  In this way, Star Trek shows its audience that, in the long run, even our bitterest enemies can become our friends and allies.

Star Trek also raises questions about what should be considered equals that humanity may eventually face as technology advances.  Namely, key episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager ask whether fully conscious and self-aware artificial life like the android Data and the holographic Doctor should have the same rights as a natural human being.  This moral question is frequently explored in science fiction.  Indeed, this question is central to the novels I, Robot and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the 21st Century reimagined Battlestar Galactica and Westworld TV series, and the films A.I.: Artificial Intelligence and Ex Machina, are but a few examples.  This is but one example of the sort of potential moral questions of the future science fiction asks us to consider.  Science fiction can even give writers the ability to explore the moral issues of the present in an indirect metaphorical fashion when a more direct approach to the given issue may not get past censors worried about receiving a negative response from more regressive and reactionary members of the general audience.  Several episodes of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone are excellent examples of this metaphorical and often unsubtle-for-clarity use of science fiction.  For example, the Star Trek episode Let That Be Your Last Battlefield has the Enterprise encounter two aliens from the same planet.  One has a face that is white on the left and black on the right, whereas the other’s face is the reverse.  These two groups persecute each other in an analogy to racism.  When the Enterprise visits their planet, they find that war has completely destroyed it.  This is a warning that such hatred could be our downfall as well, in sharp contrast to the bright future represented by the diverse Enterprise crew.  This episode was aired at a time when racial tensions were high in 1960s USA and such a message was still be considered potentially controversial.

Star Trek is an enduring and long-lasting franchise.  A major factor driving its lasting popularity is its optimistic vision for a better humanity that could be if we were to overcome our difficulties and work together.  This is an ideal to strive towards.  Indeed, such optimism has inspired several professionals to explore a career in science and technology to help build such a future.  The astronauts Sally Ride and Guion Bluford are but two such examples, explicitly citing the positive influence of Star Trek, and its African American communications officer Uhura in particular, during their adolescence.

Much like Star Trek, Doctor Who is also a long running science fiction franchise that provides positive examples for its audience to admire.  The protagonist of Doctor Who is known only as the Doctor, and is from a race of extremely long lived extraterrestrials called Time Lords who look like human beings externally.  Time Lords mastered the ability to travel across all of space and time, using a highly advanced machine called the TARDIS.  The TARDIS moreover warps space such that its interior is much larger than its exterior, meaning that it is actually bigger on the inside.  As the Doctor and various platonic human companions travel across all of time and space in the TARDIS, they encounter numerous hostile foes including the xenophobic and genocidal Daleks, Cybermen from an alternative Earth gone wrong, and a scheming Time Lord known as the Master who is the Doctor’s opposite in every way.  In most fiction, such terrifying villains would face off against an action hero armed with weapons of some sort to fight violence with violence.  The Doctor is a radically different hero, being as close to a pacifist as one can be facing such foes.  The Doctor is armed only with super-genius level intelligence, even greater empathy, platonic companions, the TARDIUS, and a device called a “sonic screwdriver” that may as well be a magic wand.  Moreover, the Doctor’s companions are often the ones who rise to the occasion and play a critical role in saving the day, showing that they are also “bigger on the inside.”  In these ways, Doctor Who is exceptional in presenting positive role models for a younger audience.  Perhaps this affirmative message is Doctor Who’s greatest appeal, leading to its generations of immense popularity, especially in its native Britain.  Doctor Who is one of the most famous entries in the subgenre of science fiction primarily concerned with time travel, which also includes H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine, Madeline L’Enge’s A Wrinkle in Time, and the Back to the Future and Bill & Ted films.

Having considered the value of science fiction and fantasy, it behooves us to ask which stories in these massive genres are most suitable for a given age group.  Which stories should a young novice reader begin with as their introduction to these genres?  Which stories should such a reader later consider along their journey to becoming a fully developed adult with more advanced literacy and a sophisticated intellect?

The potential path is fairly well known in the case of fantasy.  Young readers can begin with such novel series as J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson, Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea, and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.  This is in addition to such classics for young readers as C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.  As fantasy readers mature, they could move on to more advanced novels as Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files series, and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods.  By the time fantasy fans have become fully developed and sophisticated adults, they are prepared to explore fantasy novel series with more mature themes and complex three-dimensional characters, including George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire, Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles.

What is the comparable trajectory for science fiction?  Madeline L’Enge’s A Wrinkle in Time could serve as an excellent introduction to science fiction for young readers.  As avid science fiction readers progress through their school age years, they can progressively explore such science fiction novel series as Douglas Adam’s satirical and whimsical The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game as well as Lois Lowry’s The Giver.  Upon reaching the maturity of adulthood, our readers are now ready for the complex adult themes of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon, Margret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, William Gibson’s Neuromancer, and Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash.

Regardless of a given reader’s age, we encourage them to consider exploring science fiction and fantasy as wonderous and inspired genres of fiction that are all too often are not given their due credit by gatekeepers of so-called “proper literature” unwilling to look past the presence of wizards, robots, aliens, etc.  Science fiction and fantasy are indeed also valid literature more than worthy of consideration.
