How to Study Effectively for School or College

Did you know that the way you study can actually determine how well and how quickly you will retain information? Even if you spend hours working on material, you can sometimes get a grade that is not as good as you expected.  One of the biggest reasons people do not succeed on exams is because they are not studying the right way.  Certain study habits can make it easier on your brain to memorize material, and even save you time, making studying for exams as stress-free as possible.

One of the easiest ways to improve your studying is by studying in the right place.  Even if you think it does not bother you, having a television, music, or cellphone nearby can negatively impact your studying habits.  Though it may not seem like it, having distractions around means that your brain is focused on more than just the material you are studying, and makes it more difficult for you to remember and retain what you are learning.  Instead, try cutting out all distractions, and find a quiet place to work away from anyone who might bother you.  Your room, the library, Amazing Tutors' community-based tutoring centers, and even a quiet classroom at school are good places to study.

Surprisingly, another effective studying tool is remembering to take breaks.  Pushing yourself too hard for too long will tire your brain out, and make the rest of your studying less effective.  Your brain works best with a series of quick breaks and it is recommended that these breaks occur every thirty minutes to one hour.  The break should not by more than five to ten minutes, so you can still spend most of your time studying, but you can figure out how often, and how long, breaks should be to work best for you.  To keep yourself motivated, having a reward like candy, or letting yourself check Facebook after you have studied for a certain amount of time works great, too.

Another problem that affects studying is procrastination.  Having a planner and arranging certain times each day just for studying will make you more likely to sit down and get it done, rather than if you start studying at different time each day, with no determined time limit.  When you are actively studying, remember that just reading the textbook or review guide with a highlighter is not the best use of your time.  In fact, studying like that makes you less likely to remember what you have read.  Instead, try to get more involved in your studying.  If you are taking notes, try using different colors of pens when writing.  Your brain is actually more likely to remember the notes you are taking down when you use different colors, because it makes the information more memorable.  It can also be helpful because you can organize your notes by the color they are written in, with a different color for each topic.  Another effective form of studying is flashcards.  These are a great way to test yourself on the information you are learning, because they show you what material you are having trouble remembering.  But an even better way to learn material is to teach it to someone else.  Take a family member, a friend, or even a pet, and teach them the information your exam is on. If you can teach it effectively, then you know it for the exam.

So, if you are preparing for an exam, remember these tips, and your studying will be easier and more successful.  It might even take you less time than before, leaving more time for sleep and relaxation before the big day.  Just make sure not to leave all studying for the night before, and to use your time effectively.

Kind Word from a BC Certified Teacher

"Working at Amazing Tutors over the last year has been an amazing experience.  The company provides students with a curriculum based on their skill level which students work on at their own pace with the guidance of a tutor in order to improve the foundational skills necessary for success in school. By allowing students to work at an appropriate level at their own pace each child is set up for success in their individual learning.  This set up gives students the opportunity to build confidence working on assignments at their skill level while still offering challenges which require the student to problem solve and increase their proficiency in the given subject area.  The small group tutoring at Amazing Tutors gives each student access to a tutor if they need individual attention but also allows them to engage with their peers if they are struggling on a question; building students' social skills and giving other students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of concepts."                                                                                                                                                                                      - A.
